Fundraising Tips for Marathon Runners (and Other Individual Fundraisers Too!)

GoodTwo’s based in Boston, which means we’re lucky to have a front-row seat for the Boston Marathon every year. The race, one of the most coveted marathons in the country, is a spectacle to watch and an amazing feat of athleticism. But what’s perhaps even more impressive is the fact that every year, Boston Marathoners raise more than $10 million for charity. The marathoners–ordinary people like you and I, not fundraising professionals–are given basic tools and, a new study finds, do most of their fundraising online.

The Chronicle of Philanthropy has a great writeup on a recent study of Boston marathoners that delves into what makes them such successful fundraisers. The whole thing is worth a read, but perhaps most interesting are some of the benchmarks that the study proposes. On average, the runners raise $3,640 and need to get donations from 36 to 40 donors to get there. The study suggests asking for higher amounts of money, in the range of $75 to $100, a habit that highly successful fundraisers have.
